Safe Levels Of Alcohol Consumption

There are some general guidelines in place for what are considered safe levels of drinking alcohol. People frequently want to know what they are in order to determine whether they have an alcohol abuse problem or to understand how much drinking is healthy.

Most experts believe that the majority of adults are able to drink a moderate amount of alcohol on a regular basis without having problems in their life. The maximum amount that is considered a moderate intake of alcohol consumption is up to one drink per day for women and older individuals and up to two drinks per day for men. The definition of what a drink is depends on the form of alcohol. Those are the guidelines for alcohol consumption for the average healthy adult. However, there are many types of people that it is recommended never drink alcohol at all. People recovering from alcoholism should avoid drinking altogether. Ignoring this guideline leads to a greatly increased risk of relapse. Those with an alcohol abuse problem should closely monitor their intake and consider abstinence if they can’t control their drinking.

Women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant should not consume alcohol. Certain types of over-the-counter and prescription medicines interact with alcohol and can create harmful effects. People with health conditions and mental illnesses that are worsened by drinking should avoid it. This can include things like liver conditions, depression, and personality disorders. Many individuals with a mental illness are also more likely to develop drug and alcohol addiction, which is called dual diagnosis. Finally, anyone who is going to drive a vehicle should not consume more than a very small amount of alcohol.
