Common Personality Traits for Alcohol and Drug Addiction

Experts have identified a number of traits that are common indicators of who is likely to develop a drug addiction or alcoholism. Not everyone who suffers from these conditions will fit into the characteristics, and there are many people with the personality traits who never develop alcohol and drug addiction.

However, knowing what these characteristics are can be beneficial in more than one way. They help addiction treatment professionals know what skills they need for helping patients. They can also help addicts realize that they aren’t alone in these issues and perhaps give them hints of what factors contribute to their alcoholism and drug abuse.

It is believed that there are at least four million people in the United States who have a dual diagnosis. That means they must deal with both a substance addiction and a mental illness. They begin using drugs or alcohol to self-medicate their psychological problems. Common mental illnesses that are seen in people with a dual diagnosis include personality disorders, depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Antisocial personality disorder is the most common.

People who have a weak sense of self are more likely to succumb to drug and alcohol addiction. They may be easily talked into things by their peer group, or they may try to find their identity by using these substances. This is why building positive self-esteem is a part of many addiction treatment programs.

Research shows that stress from traumatic life events contributes to addiction. People who don’t know how to handle this stress are more likely to develop addiction. This includes current situations of extreme stress, such as divorce or the death of a close family member or friend. It can also be from a past experience, including childhood abuse.

Other personality traits that are common in people with alcoholism or drug addiction include perfectionism, isolation or loneliness, sexual problems, withholding anger, social immaturity, compulsiveness, trouble with authority figures, and low tolerance for frustration.
