How to do Addiction Interventions

Drug abuse and drug addiction clouds the addict’s mind. The fact that their life is spinning out of control is no as clear to them as it is to those around them. The biggest misconception is often that they believe they are hiding their addiction from those close to them. That is never the case though. Friends and family can always see the signs. The person they know and love slowly disappears; replaced by an addict that they hardly recognize. This new person in their life suddenly cares only for themselves and their addiction. You should always talk to a professional, but here are some basic tips for an addiction intervention.

Prior to the Addiction Intervention
These questions will tell you who will be a good presence at your addiction intervention. Who cares for the addict the most? Whose opinion will the addict hear and respect? When you have reached a list for the final group, work on planning meetings. These meetings will give you a list of concerns that you will want to address with the addict. Will one person speak for everyone? Or will each person share his or her own feelings? These are the details that should be determined prior to the final pre-addiction intervention meeting. The final meeting should come shortly before the actual addiction intervention. This final meeting should be a mock-up of the actual addiction intervention.

Addiction Intervention Day
The group should be assembled prior to arriving at the location of the addiction intervention. (If the addict is the one who will be doing the arriving then the entire group should be waiting when he arrives). Make sure the addict knows that they are being confronted. There can be no room for acceptance at an addiction intervention. But also make sure the addict doesn’t feel attacked. This is where the walk through can be helpful. Push forward with the points everyone agreed on.
