Alcohol Rehab Programs Could Make Drunk Driving Consequences More Effective
Drunk driving is a serious issue that deserves to receive the attention it gets. However, some people believe that law enforcement may be going about handling drunk driving in an ineffective manner. The most common way that this issue is dealt with, in the United States as well as in many other countries around the world, is to give increasingly harsh penalties to people who engage in this reckless behavior. The fines for drunk driving are increased, jail time in instituted, and offenders lose their drivers’ licenses for longer periods of time.
However, studies show that most of the individuals who operate vehicles while over the legal alcohol limit suffer from alcoholism. This means that simply being given a fine, having their legal right to drive suspended or revoked, and even jail sentences are often ineffective for preventing the behavior from happening again in the future. There is no doubt that these individuals should be punished. They have broken the law and put innocent lives at risk with their actions. Most of the punishments currently handed out are a temporary fix at best, though.
Adding useful alcoholism treatment program to the consequences could do a lot to prevent repeat offenders. A person who suffers from the disease of alcoholism will not change their behavior simply because they have been caught and reprimanded. It is necessary to give attention to the root cause behind their actions. Alcohol rehab programs should be required for individuals who are caught driving drunk, whether they go to jail or get help in the community. The difficulty, of course, is in finding the funding and resources to make this a possibility. There is a way to make it happen if people begin paying more attention to the issue and ask for effective alcohol addiction treatment for drunk drivers.
