Staying in a Residential Treatment Center Too Long

There is an interesting phenomenon in alcohol rehab programs that people who suffer from an addiction should be aware of. Some research has shown that if you stay in a treatment program too long, your chances of successful recovery may actually decline. The optimum amount of time to be in drug and alcohol rehabilitation is about ninety days. Stays that are shorter in length tend to be less effective because you have not had enough time to learn the skills and tools that you will need to change your lifestyle. You haven’t spent enough time in the structured environment or been sober long enough to be able to maintain it on your own. However, staying for a very long period of time can be detrimental to long-term recovery, as well.

The issue of how long to stay in a rehab program is a very personal one. This is not to suggest that you should go home after three months if you are still receiving benefits and learning new things from a treatment center. In fact, that is far from the truth. On the other hand, don’t become stagnant and remain there for a year or two simply because it has become comfortable and you don’t want the pressures of dealing with daily life in the outside world. After a certain point, you need to put the new things you have learned into real practice.

After you have gotten some time under your belt in a treatment center, your counselors will be able to help you determine how long you should continue to stay. It is very difficult to make an estimate before you even begin, though. For most people, about ninety days will give you the best opportunity of being able to achieve the things that you want to in drug and alcohol rehabilitation and after you leave, though some require longer.
