Teen Alcohol Abuse–Talking to Your Teens About Abusing Alcohol on Prom Night
Every year when prom rolls around parents have to deal with the worry that their teenager may be on of the hundreds of teens who are either killed or injured on prom night in an alcohol related incident. Many communities and schools have programs designed to educate teens about the dangers of alcohol abuse and they typically run these programs around the same time prom events are scheduled. The most important and effective tool a parent can use to combat this issue is to talk with their child about the dangers related with substance abuse.
There are many other things that you can do to help ensure your teens safety on prom night. First you should discuss what your teens prom plans are and make sure you know what the plan is from start to finish. You can also do a little investigation to check for party plans by going online to social networking sites and finding out if there are any big prom after parties planned that you are unaware of. Talk with other parents and school officials, try and arrange that food is served at the prom.
Make sure your child does not have access to your personal stock of alcohol. Make sure your child is aware of your expectations and the rules of the prom and let them no what the consequences for violating those rules will be. If your child has a history of alcohol abuse, make sure that they understand addiction treatment will be mandatory if they break the rules.
Do not rent out hotel rooms for your teen and their friends or allow them use of a shore home. When they are leaving remind them to use their seat belt and then wait up until they arrive safely home. Make sure they know you are waiting!
